I’ve been teaching languages one-to-one for over twenty years. These days it’s all online, which means no travel and a lesson that starts the moment you sit down. Most of the people I work with arrive having decided they’re bad at languages. My research into how learning works is a large part of why I can usually tell that story back to them differently.

Hi, I’m Anneke.
I provide language tutoring services, one-to-one and online: German, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), and academic writing – with school students preparing for GCSEs, A levels and the IB, undergraduates, and adults who need the language for a job, a move, or a qualification they left unfinished. Some arrive with a date circled on a calendar. Others have been stuck at B1 for three years and want to know why.
Behind the teaching sits a PhD in Education, a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and a long habit of reading the research. I trained as a researcher, and spent years writing about education and learning technology for titles including The Guardian and Teach Secondary. Mostly, it stops me mistaking my own preferences for pedagogy.
Why Skill & Care?
There are two main ways a language lesson can fail. In the first, the tutor knows the subject inside out but not the person in front of them, so the explanations arrive perfectly formed and slide straight past. In the second, the tutor is warm, encouraging and easy to talk to — and a year later you are exactly where you started.
In other words, skill without care reaches nobody, and care without skill is just good company. The name is a reminder that neither is optional in language tutoring.
