Private Tutoring & Mentoring Services for German & EFL: Devon-based & Online.

Hi, I’m Anneke, and I teach German, English and academic writing online.
I work from a private office in Tiverton, Devon, but all my teaching happens online, which means I work with learners across the UK, Germany, and further afield: one-to-one and in small groups, from GCSE and A-level students to undergraduates and adults coming back to learning later in life.
Education has been my world for a long time. I hold a PhD in Education and a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status from the University of Exeter, spent some years teaching in British schools, and have been tutoring privately for over twenty years. I’m a member of The Tutors’ Association and fully DBS-checked. I also write about education and learning technology, mostly as a way of following the research a bit further than a lesson allows. Teaching well is not something you finish learning, and this is one of the ways I keep at it.

I offer a free consultation call. No commitment – just a chance to tell me what you need and see whether we’re a good fit.

What I Offer
I offer online tuition in these three areas, but if you have a related or more specific request, please get in touch.
German Tuition (Native Speaker)
Personalised language coaching for all levels, from beginners to advanced. I cover grammar and literacy, reading and listening comprehension, and conversation, with specialist exam preparation for GCSE, A-level, and IB – plus telc, TestDaF, DSH, Goethe, and fide for expats settling in Germany, Switzerland or Austria. Twenty years of private tutoring as a native German speaker underpin every session I lead. And I love working with adult learners too, whether you’re picking up German for travel, a career move, or simply because you’ve always wanted to.
English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
If you’re learning English from scratch or building on existing foundations, I offer structured, conversation-led tuition for teenagers and adults at every level. We work on grammar, reading and listening comprehension, and the confidence to communicate naturally, whether your goal is professional, personal, or simply the pleasure of feeling at home in a second language. I prepare learners for Cambridge, IELTS, and other recognised EFL examinations, too.
Academic Writing & Research Skills
Strong academic writing is a skill in its own right — and one rarely taught explicitly. I work with international learners and university students who need to write clearly, argue persuasively, and engage with complex sources in English. Sessions cover essay structure, critical analysis, referencing, and the close reading that rigorous academic subjects demand. Preparing for UK school or university entrance? I can help you get there. And if you’re mid-degree but struggling to put your ideas on the page, that’s where this work counts.

How I Work
My teaching method adapts to you. Sometimes that means working closely through a text or a piece of your own writing. Other times, it’s talking ideas through or learning by doing. The common thread is that you — not the syllabus — drive the approach.
I’ve been teaching, developing eLearning courses, and creating specialist content online for more than a decade now, so remote tuition feels completely natural to me. I know how to make a screen feel like a shared space, how to read a pause, and how to keep sessions focused without making them rigid.

But what really matters to me is this: one-to-one tuition lets me build a genuine relationship with each learner. That trust is what makes it possible to teach in a way that’s truly tailored to how you think, learn, and grow.
Qualifications
I sometimes joke that I’m a professional student who never quite left the building. But there’s a serious point beneath the surface: I just believe in lifelong learning, and I’ve structured my career around it. Alongside tutoring, I write about education and learning technology for a living, which means I’m constantly engaging with new research, new thinking, and new ways of understanding how people learn.
- PhD in Education, University of Exeter
- PGCE in Secondary Education with Qualified Teacher Status, University of Exeter
- MA in Religious Studies (Distinction), University of Chester
- BA (Hons) in Humanities with Philosophy (First-class), The Open University

My qualifications are all from UK institutions. I also conducted doctoral-level research on primary and secondary education in English schools and co-authored a student textbook and a CPD handbook for teachers and teacher educators.
Got a question? Let’s start there.
Send me a message. I’d love to hear where you are and what you’re working towards — and maybe we can walk part of that learning journey together.
